Mafalda Costa
Mafalda Costa lives and works in Porto, Portugal as a multidisciplinary artist. Her artistic practice is both experimental and intuitive, focusing on research into the Garden as a space for creation and connection with the contemporary world. Her work draws from investigations into plants, dreams, archaeology, and amulets, as well as parallel realities, imagined worlds or realms of the unconscious.
She started working with beeswax around 2019 when she began to make her own oil pastels with it. Then, Mafalda started to explore the plasticity of the material and began making sculptures with the beeswax. The candle making project occurred naturally and blended in with the studio work, starting by making candles for herself and friends. Her intention is that the candles can be burning amulets or shrine pieces to keep you safe.
The beeswax is sourced from local beekeepers, in Portugal and Spain. Each candle is hand dipped and molded by hand, they all have slight variations, making each one unique.
